The main characters in Christopher Paolini's book Inheritance, are Eragon, Saphira, Roran, and Nausada. Eragon is arguably the "main, main" character in Inheritance. He is a farm-boy turned savior of Alegeisa. Eragon is the first Dragon Rider in hundreds of years, and he is tasked with killing the tyrant king known as Galbotrix, with the help of a rebellion known as, "The Varden". All races in Alagaesia have together to help defeat the evil the tyrant king, Galbatorix. This includes the Elves, the Dwarves, the Wearcats, and the Urgals. Galbatorix is also a Dragon Rider, though he is the one who plotted and killed all of the Dragon Riders order, with the help of his followers known as the Forsworn. Saphira is Eragons dragon, as Eragon is her rider. Saphira is one of the few hatched dragons alive at this time, and at this point is well trained and battle hardened. Saphira has a special bond with Eragon, where they are in someways a single entity/force/being. Another one of the main characters is Roran. Roran, is Eragon's blood cousin, but is more like a brother to him. They were raised together due to Eragon's mother dying and his father Brom, not claiming him. Nausada, the last of the main characters is the only black female we get to know in the book. Her father who was leader of The Varden died earlier, so she took the throne. Eragon has sworn fealty to her, and she is a major factor in dictating his decisions, which is ultimately the fate of Alagaesia. In the book she goes threw "The Trial of Knives" where she versus some big tribal man, seeing who can .. cut their wrist more.
The theme of Inheritance, is never giving up, no matter how difficult things get. An example of this theme is when Eragon is battling Galbatorix. Eragon who is far less skilled, and a lot weaker than Galbatorix; though Eragon hold on to his hope and doesn't give up. Eragon is immobilized by a spell Galbatorix cast. Eragon can't speak though he can project thoughts into a spell, but this is risky, and could result in the casters demise. Eragon does not give up, and mentally cast a spell to make Galbatorix feel all the grief he has caused the race of the Dragons. This makes Galbatorix unable to focus and Eragon stabs him. Though all odds were against Eragon, he stayed true, and never gave up, no matter the difficulty.
An example of symbolism in the book is how knowledge is power. This is shown by how to learn spells you have to learn an extremely difficult language and understand the meaning of the words in order to receive the full power of the spells.
